109 INDIAN FISHERMEN AND TAKEN OVER 06 SRI LANKAN FISHERMEN (Photos)

The Northern Command facilitated in the repatriation of 109 Indian fishermen on AM
today (20 th February 2018) at International Maritime Boundary Line, North of Kankasanthurai.
Also Indian Coast Guard handed over 06 Sri Lankan fishermen to Sri Lanka Coast Guard who
were retain Indian custody for venturing Indian waters at the same occasion. All the Indian
fishermen were released from Sri Lankan custody after detaining them for poaching in the
island’s territorial waters.
These fishermen were apprehended in separate arrests made by the Sri Lanka Navy and
the Sri Lanka Coast Guard in the Northern waters for illegally venturing into Sri Lankan waters
and engaging in bottom trawling, a destructive fishing method. Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS
Rani Durgavati, ICGS Atulya, Sri Lanka Navy Ship SLNS Udara, SLNS Wickrama II, SLNS
Abeetha II and Sri Lanka Coast Guard Craft CG 409 engaged in the mission.
